On the crisp ,  Winter morning of January 26 ,  1996 ,  a beautiful baby girl was born to Rowena and Marcel Delacroix .    They named her Corinne .    A typical European family ,  the Delacroixs lived nestled in the bustling , cosmopolitan city of Paris ,  France .    Surrounded by magnificent art ,  literature ,  and architecture ,  it seemed that Corinne would grow into a well - groomed ,  educated socialite .    Her father made his means as an auditor , monitoring the finances of businesses and organizations to help them run efficiently .    Her mother worked as an up - and - coming interior designer .    The two careers combined meant the Delacroixs lived quite comfortably , but it also meant that they were often away from home ,  leaving their young daughter in the care of a nanny or close relative .Corinne didn’t mind all that much .      She hadn’t known any different ,  and she spent her formative years as a mild - mannered but happy child .    She attended school and made excellent grades ,  was well behaved and although not particularly popular ,  had a group of friends she held in high regard and considered close .    It might have seemed ,  to the unsuspecting outsider ,  that Corinne’s life was picturesque .    A glossy fairytale meant only for storybooks .    For a while, it had been .

Hard times fell on the Delacroix family when Corinne entered Collège  ( first four years of secondary education in France ) .    The constant business of her parents that kept them away from their daughter also kept them away from each other ,  and the strain in their marriage began to show when Corinne was just twelve years old .    For the sake of their daughter ,  they kept their bickering to themselves ,  behind closed doors ,  leaving Corinne unaware of her parents’ deteriorating relationship until it was too late .Over the next couple of years ,  her parents’ absence began to grow a pattern .    When Marcel would come home from a trip ,  Rowena would conveniently have to leave on one of her own ,  and when Rowena was home ,  Marcel had some business he needed to attend to elsewhere .    The absences and the bickering and all the little problems that had eventually grown into much larger ones came to a head when Corinne had just turned fifteen .    Rowena filed for divorce ,  and by the end of that year ,  the two were separated with Corinne living with her mother on the other side of Paris .It took some time for Corinne to adjust .    A lot of things had changed .    Not only had her parents split ,  but the absence of her father’s salary meant that Corinne and her mother had to live on much more limited means and Corinne had just started Lycée  ( last three years of secondary education ) .    That was a hard year ,  with Rowena struggling to maintain her career while caring for Corinne .    In the meantime ,  Corinne settled as best she could into her secondary education .    New school ,  new faces .    The curriculum was harder ,  but she maintained her good grades and kept herself out of trouble in hopes that it would be one less thing for her mother to stress over .    She made new friends ,    even dated a boy or two .Things were starting to look up again .But good things never did last ,  did they ?Aged sixteen .    It happened on a weekend her mother went out of town for work .    She trusted her daughter was old enough now to handle things at the house and Corinne was fine with that .    She never expected what was coming .    In the months prior to that weekend ,  she’d dated a boy and broken up with him .    His name was Lucas .    He was nice ,  but had a bit of a temper and Corinne had quickly fallen uncomfortable with the relationship ,  ending things before it got too heavy .    Well ,  that hadn’t sat well with Lucas .On the weekend her mother was out of town ,  Lucas came over with the pretense of wanting to talk to Corinne .    Talking wasn’t what happened at all . Angry and bitter over their break - up ,  he forced himself on her ,  taking what he thought was “owed” to him .    He left as quickly as he came ,  leaving Corinne shaking and crying to pick up the tattered pieces of what had — up until that point — been an idyllic life .      When Rowena came home two days later ,  Corinne said nothing .    She pushed the event to the farthest reaches of her conscious and refused to say a word about it .    When she returned to school ,  she didn’t say a thing ,  but she avoided Lucas every time she saw him in the hallway and tried not to jump every time his name was mentioned .A month passed and Corinne told no one .And then a year and she still told no one .By that time ,  Corinne had changed .    She grew jumpy and withdrawn ,  hated being touched ,  and Rowena began to notice .    Marcel ,  too ,  on the weekends he had her .    Marcel ,  her sweet Papa ,  had been the first to confront her about her strange behavior .    Corinne broke down crying and told him everything .    Her father was furious — not at Corinne ,  but at Lucas .    At himself .    At Rowena .    He immediately called up his ex - wife and told her what had happened ,  but her reaction was very different from his .She rejected the idea that Corinne had been raped .It wasn’t so much that Rowena didn’t believe her daughter .    She did .    She really did .    But the fact was ,  Rowena couldn’t handle knowing she had let her daughter go so long feeling like she couldn’t tell anyone what happened .    Marcel wanted to press charges against Lucas .    Rowena ,  too .    But so much time had passed it would have been difficult to prove that she had been raped without some type of evidence .    So Lucas didn’t get punished ,  and Corinne had to find ways to cope with what she’d been through .Her parents agreed to send her to counselling ,  and that helped a little .    Corinne was able to talk about it with a professional and know that they would take her seriously .    At home ,  with Rowena ,  it wasn’t quite the same after the truth came out .    Her mother ,  still wanting to reject the truth of the matter , took to drinking wine more than just for dinner parties and anytime the ordeal was brought up in any manner ,  she’d make excuses to change the subject or purposefully ignore it altogether .    Corinne tried not to be hurt by that ,  but it was hard .    Other than her counselor and her father ,  she had no one to confide in .    She couldn’t tell her friends .    As much as she loved them ,  she didn’t want them to know .    Corinne finished her last few years of secondary education and graduated knowing that ,  for the most part ,  she was on her own in this .Every day presents new struggles ,  but Corinne is trying .    She just takes things one day at a time .
